Capítulo 18

La visita del Señor a Abraham en Mamré

1 El Señor se apareció a Abraham junto al encinar de Mamré, mientras él estaba sentado a la entrada de su carpa, a la hora de más calor.

2 Alzando los ojos, divisó a tres hombres que estaban parados cerca de él. Apenas los vio, corrió a su encuentro desde la entrada de la carpa y se inclinó hasta el suelo.

3 diciendo: «Señor mío, si quieres hacerme un favor, te ruego que no pases de largo delante de tu servidor.

4 Yo haré que les traigan un poco de agua. Lávense los pies y descansen a la sombra del árbol.

5 Mientras tanto, iré a buscar un trozo de pan, para que ustedes reparen sus fuerzas antes de seguir adelante. ¡Por algo han pasado junto a su servidor!». Ellos respondieron: «Está bien. Puedes hacer lo que dijiste».

6 Abraham fue rápidamente a la carpa donde estaba Sara y le dijo: «¡Pronto! Toma tres medidas de la mejor harina, amásalas y prepara unas tortas».

7 Después fue corriendo hasta el corral, eligió un ternero tierno y bien cebado, y lo entregó a su sirviente, que de inmediato se puso a prepararlo.

8 Luego tomó cuajada, leche y el ternero ya preparado, y se los sirvió. Mientras comían, él se quedó de pie al lado de ellos, debajo del árbol.

9 Ellos le preguntaron: «¿Dónde está Sara, tu mujer?». «Ahí en la carpa», les respondió.

10 Entonces uno de ellos le dijo: «Volveré a verte sin falta en el año entrante, y para ese entonces Sara habrá tenido un hijo». Mientras tanto, Sara había estado escuchando a la entrada de la carpa, que estaba justo detrás de él.

11 Abraham y Sara eran ancianos de edad avanzada, y los períodos de Sara ya habían cesado.

12 Por eso, ella rió en su interior, pensando: «Con lo vieja que soy, ¿volveré a experimentar el placer? Además, ¡mi marido es tan viejo!».

13 Pero el Señor dijo a Abraham: «¿Por qué se ha reído Sara, pensando que no podrá dar a luz, siendo tan vieja?

14 ¿Acaso hay algo imposible para el Señor? Cuando yo vuelva a verte para esta época, en el año entrante, Sara habrá tenido un hijo».

15 Ella tuvo miedo, y trató de engañarlo, diciendo: «No, no me he reído». Pero él le respondió: «Sí, te has reído».

La intercesión de Abraham en favor de Sodoma

16 Después, los hombres salieron de allí y se dirigieron hacia Sodoma, y Abraham los acompañó para despedirlos.

17 Mientras tanto, el Señor pensaba: «¿Dejaré que Abraham ignore lo que ahora voy a realizar,

18 siendo así que él llegará a convertirse en una nación grande y poderosa, y que por él se bendecirán todas las naciones de la tierra?

19 Porque yo lo he elegido para que enseñe a sus hijos, y a su familia después de él, que se mantengan en el camino del Señor, practicando lo que es justo y recto. Así el Señor hará por Abraham lo que ha predicho acerca de él».

20 Luego el Señor añadió: «El clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra es tan grande, y su pecado tan grave,

21 que debo bajar a ver si sus acciones son realmente como el clamor que ha llegado hasta mí. Si no es así, lo sabré».

22 Dos de esos hombres partieron de allí y se fueron hacia Sodoma, pero el Señor se quedó de pie frente a Abraham.

23 Entonces Abraham se le acercó y le dijo: «¿Así que vas a exterminar al justo junto con el culpable?

24 Tal vez haya en la ciudad cincuenta justos. ¿Y tú vas a arrasar ese lugar, en vez de perdonarlo por amor a los cincuenta justos que hay en él?

25 ¡Lejos de ti hacer semejante cosa! ¡Matar al justo juntamente con el culpable, haciendo que los dos corran la misma suerte! ¡Lejos de ti! ¿Acaso el Juez de toda la tierra no va a hacer justicia?».

26 El Señor respondió: «Si encuentro cincuenta justos en la ciudad de Sodoma, perdonaré a todo ese lugar en atención a ellos».

27 Entonces Abraham dijo: «Yo, que no soy más que polvo y ceniza, tengo el atrevimiento de dirigirme a mi Señor.

28 Quizá falten cinco para que los justos lleguen a cincuenta. Por esos cinco ¿vas a destruir toda la ciudad?». «No la destruiré si encuentro allí cuarenta y cinco», respondió el Señor.

29 Pero Abraham volvió a insistir: «Quizá no sean más de cuarenta». Y el Señor respondió: «No lo haré por amor a esos cuarenta».

30 «Por favor, dijo entonces Abraham, que mi Señor no lo tome a mal si continúo insistiendo. Quizá sean solamente treinta». Y el Señor respondió: «No lo haré si encuentro allí a esos treinta».

31 Abraham insistió: «Una vez más, me tomo el atrevimiento de dirigirme a mi Señor. Tal vez no sean más que veinte». «No la destruiré en atención a esos veinte», declaró el Señor.

32 «Por favor, dijo entonces Abraham, que mi Señor no se enoje si hablo por última vez. Quizá sean solamente diez». «En atención a esos diez, respondió, no la destruiré».

33 Apenas terminó de hablar con él, el Señor se fue, y Abraham regresó a su casa.

Chapter 18

The LORD appeared to Abraham by the terebinth of Mamre, as he sat in the entrance of his tent, while the day was growing hot.

Looking up, he saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground,

¹ he said: “Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your servant.

Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves under the tree.

Now that you have come this close to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves; and afterward you may go on your way.” “Very well,” they replied, “do as you have said.”

² Abraham hastened into the tent and told Sarah, “Quick, three seahs of fine flour! Knead it and make rolls.”

He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice steer, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it.

³ Then he got some curds and milk, as well as the steer that had been prepared, and set these before them; and he waited on them under the tree while they ate.

“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There in the tent,” he replied.

⁴ One of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah will then have a son.” Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, just behind him.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years, and Sarah had stopped having her womanly periods.

⁵ So Sarah laughed to herself and said, “Now that I am so withered and my husband is so old, am I still to have sexual pleasure?”

But the LORD said to Abraham: “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I really bear a child, old as I am?’

Is anything too marvelous for the LORD to do? At the appointed time, about this time next year, I will return to you, and Sarah will have a son.”

Because she was afraid, Sarah dissembled, saying, “I didn’t laugh.” But he said, “Yes you did.”

The men set out from there and looked down toward Sodom; Abraham was walking with them, to see them on their way.

The LORD reflected: “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do,

now that he is to become a great and populous nation, and all the nations of the earth are to find blessing in him?

Indeed, I have singled him out that he may direct his sons and his posterity to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD may carry into effect for Abraham the promises he made about him.”

⁶ Then the LORD said: “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave,

that I must go down and see whether or not their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out.”

While the two men walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham.

Then Abraham drew nearer to him and said: “Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty?

Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it?

Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty, so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?”

The LORD replied, “If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Abraham spoke up again: “See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes!

What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?” “I will not destroy it,” he answered, “if I find forty-five there.”

But Abraham persisted, saying, “What if only forty are found there?” He replied, “I will forebear doing it for the sake of the forty.”

Then he said, “Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?” He replied, “I will forebear doing it if I can find but thirty there.”

Still he went on, “Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?” “I will not destroy it,” he answered, “for the sake of the twenty.”

But he still persisted: “Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?” “For the sake of those ten,” he replied, “I will not destroy it.”

The LORD departed as soon as he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned home.

1 [3] Abraham addresses the leader of the group, whom he does not yet recognize as Yahweh; in the next two verses he speaks to all three men. The other two are later (⇒ Genesis 19:1) identified as messengers.

2 [6] Three seahs: one ephah, about half a bushel.

3 [8] Curds: a type of soft cheese or yoghurt.

4 [10] One of them: i.e., the Lord. Abraham now realizes this for the first time when he hears the prediction of a miraculous birth. About this time next year: literally “when the time becomes alive,” i.e., at the time when birth is due after the period of gestation; the conception is understood as taking place soon after the prediction.

6 [20] Israelite tradition was unanimous in ascribing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah to the wickedness of these cities, but tradition varied in regard to the nature of this wickedness. According to the present account of the Yahwist, the sin of Sodom was homosexuality (⇒ Genesis 19:4-5), which is therefore also known as sodomy; but according to Isaiah (⇒ Isaiah 1:9-10; ⇒ 3:9), it was a lack of social justice; Ezekiel (⇒ Ezekiel 16:46-51) described it as a disregard for the poor, whereas Jeremiah (⇒ Jeremiah 23:14) saw it as general immorality.
