Capítulo 25

Los otros hijos de Abraham

1 Abraham se casó con otra mujer, llamada Queturá,

2 y esta le dio varios hijos: Zimrán, Iocsán, Medán, Madián, Isbac y Súaj.

3 Iocsán fue padre de Sebá y Dedán. Los descendientes de Dedán fueron los asuritas, los letusíes y los leumíes.

4 Los hijos de Madián fueron Efá, Efer, Henoc, Abidá y Eldaá. Todos estos son hijos de Queturá.

5 Abraham legó todos sus bienes a Isaac.

6 También hizo regalos a los hijos de sus otras mujeres, pero mientras vivía, los apartó de su hijo Isaac, enviándolos hacia el este, a las regiones orientales.

La muerte de Abraham

7 Abraham vivió ciento setenta y cinco años.

8 Murió a una edad muy avanzada, feliz y cargado de años, y fue a reunirse con los suyos.

9 Sus hijos Isaac e Ismael lo sepultaron en la caverna de Macpelá, en el campo de Efrón, hijo de Sójar, el hitita, que está frente a Mamré.

10 Es el campo que Abraham había comprado a los descendientes de Het. Allí fueron enterrados él y su esposa Sara.

11 Después de la muerte de Abraham, Dios bendijo a su hijo Isaac, y este se estableció cerca del pozo de Lajai Roí.

Los descendientes y la muerte de Ismael

12 Esta es la descendencia de Ismael –el hijo de Agar, la sirvienta egipcia de Sara, dio a Abraham–

13 con los nombres de cada uno de sus hijos, según el orden de su nacimiento: Nebaiot, el primogénito de Ismael; luego Quedar, Abdeel, Mibsam,

14 Mismá, Dumá, Masá,

15 Jadad, Temá, Ietur, Nafis y Quedmá.

16 Estos son los hijos de Ismael; doce jefes de otras tantas tribus, que dieron sus nombres al lugar donde habitaron y a sus respectivos campamentos.

17 Ismael vivió ciento treinta y siete años. Al cabo de ellos murió, y fue a reunirse con los suyos.

18 Sus descendientes habitaron desde Javilá de Sur, que está cerca de Egipto, hasta Asur. Y cada uno de ellos realizó incursiones contra todos sus hermanos.

Isaac y Jacob

El nacimiento de Esaú y de Jacob

19 Esta es la descendencia de Isaac, el hijo de Abraham. Abraham fue padre de Isaac,

20 el cual, a los cuarenta años, se casó con Rebeca, hija de Betuel, el arameo de Padán Aram, y hermana de Labán, el arameo.

21 Isaac oró al Señor por su esposa, que era estéril. El Señor lo escuchó, y su esposa Rebeca quedó embarazada.

22 Como los niños se chocaban el uno contra el otro dentro de su seno, ella exclamó: «Si las cosas tienen que ser así, ¿vale la pena seguir viviendo?». Entonces fue a consultar al Señor,

23 y él le respondió: «En tu seno hay dos naciones, dos pueblos se separan desde tus entrañas: uno será mas fuerte que el otro, y el mayor servirá al menor».

24 Cuando llegó el momento del parto, resultó que había mellizos en su seno.

25 El que salió primero era rubio, y estaba todo cubierto de vello, como si tuviera un manto de piel. A este lo llamaron Esaú.

26 Después salió su hermano, que con su mano tenía agarrado el talón de Esaú. Por ello lo llamaron Jacob. Cuando nacieron, Isaac tenía sesenta años.

Esaú vende su derecho de hijo primogénito

27 Los niños crecieron. Esaú se convirtió en un hombre agreste, experto en la caza. Jacob, en cambio, era un hombre apacible y apegado a su carpa.

28 Isaac quería más a Esaú, porque las presas de caza eran su plato preferido; pero Rebeca sentía más cariño por Jacob.

29 En cierta ocasión, Esaú volvió exhausto del campo, mientras Jacob estaba preparando un guiso.

30 Esaú dijo a Jacob: «Déjame comer un poco de esa comida rojiza, porque estoy extenuado». Fue por eso que se dio a Esaú el nombre de Edom.

31 Pero Jacob le respondió: «Dame antes tu derecho de hijo primogénito».

32 «Me estoy muriendo», dijo Esaú. «¿De qué me servirá ese derecho?».

33 Pero Jacob insistió: «Júramelo antes». El se lo juró y le vendió su derecho de hijo primogénito.

34 Jacob le dio entonces pan y guiso de lentejas. Esaú comió y bebió; después se levantó y se fue. Así menospreció Esaú el derecho que le correspondía por ser el hijo primogénito.

Chapter 25

¹ Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah.

She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim.

The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were descendants of Keturah.

Abraham deeded everything that he owned to his son Isaac.

² To his sons by concubinage, however, he made grants while he was still living, as he sent them away eastward, to the land of Kedem, away from his son Isaac.

The whole span of Abraham’s life was one hundred and seventy-five years.

Then he breathed his last, dying at a ripe old age, grown old after a full life; and he was taken to his kinsmen.

His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which faces Mamre,

the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; there he was buried next to his wife Sarah.

After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac, who made his home near Beer-lahai-roi.

These are the descendants of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave, bore to Abraham.

These are the names of Ishmael’s sons, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth (Ishmael’s firstborn), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

These are the sons of Ishmael, their names by their villages and encampments; twelve chieftains of as many tribal groups.

The span of Ishmael’s life was one hundred and thirty-seven years. After he had breathed his last and died, he was taken to his kinsmen.

³ The Ishmaelites ranged from Havilah-by-Shur, which is on the border of Egypt, all the way to Asshur; and each of them pitched camp in opposition to his various kinsmen.

This is the family history of Isaac, son of Abraham; Abraham had begotten Isaac.

Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.

Isaac entreated the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The LORD heard his entreaty, and Rebekah became pregnant.

But the children in her womb jostled each other so much that she exclaimed, “If this is to be so, what good will it do me!” She went to consult the LORD,

and he answered her: “Two nations are in your womb, two peoples are quarreling while still within you; But one shall surpass the other, and the older shall serve the younger.”

When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.

⁴ The first to emerge was reddish, and his whole body was like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau.

⁵ His brother came out next, gripping Esau’s heel; so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man who lived in the open; whereas Jacob was a simple man, who kept to his tents.

Isaac preferred Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah preferred Jacob.

Once, when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the open, famished.

⁶ He said to Jacob, “Let me gulp down some of that red stuff; I’m starving.” (That is why he was called Edom.)

⁷ But Jacob replied, “First give me your birthright in exchange for it.”

“Look,” said Esau, “I’m on the point of dying. What good will any birthright do me?”

But Jacob insisted, “Swear to me first!” So he sold Jacob his birthright under oath.

Jacob then gave him some bread and the lentil stew; and Esau ate, drank, got up, and went his way. Esau cared little for his birthright.

1 [1-11] Though mentioned here, Abraham’s marriage to a “concubine,” or wife of secondary rank, and his death are not to be understood as happening chronologically after the events narrated in the preceding chapter.

2 [6] The land of Kedem: or “the country of the East,” the region inhabited by the Kedemites or Easterners (⇒ Genesis 29:1; ⇒ Judges 6:3, ⇒ 33; ⇒ Job 1:3; ⇒ Isaiah 11:14). The names mentioned in ⇒ Genesis 25:2-4, as far as they can be identified, are those of tribes in the Arabian desert.

3 [18] Pitched camp: literally “fell”; the same Hebrew verb is used in ⇒ Judges 7:12 in regard to the hostile encampment of Bedouin tribes. The present passage shows the fulfillment of the prediction contained in ⇒ Genesis 16:12.

4 [25] Reddish: in Hebrew, admoni, a reference to Edom, another name for Esau (⇒ Genesis 25:30; ⇒ 36:1). Edom, however, was really the name of the country south of Moab where the descendants of Esau lived. It was called the “red” country because of its reddish sandstone. Hairy: in Hebrew, sear, a reference to Seir, another name for Edom (⇒ Genesis 36:8). One might expect the text to say, “So they named him Seir”; but Esau (esaw) also means “hairy.”

5 [26] Esau’s heel: the Hebrew is baaqeb esaw, a reference to the name Jacob; cf ⇒ Genesis 27:36. Probably, however, the name Jacob has no true etymological connection with the Hebrew word for “heel” (aqeb) but is instead a shortened form of some such name as yaaqob-el (“may God protect”).

6 [30] Red stuff: in Hebrew, adom; another play on the word Edom, the “red” land.

7 [31] Birthright: the privilege that entitled the first-born son to a position of honor in the family and to a double share in the possessions inherited from the father.
