Capítulo 33
El encuentro de Jacob con Esaú
1 Jacob alzó los ojos, y al ver que Esaú venía acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres, repartió a los niños entre Lía, Raquel y las dos esclavas.
2 Puso al frente a las esclavas con sus niños, luego a Lía y a sus hijos, y por último a Raquel y a José.
3 Después se adelantó él personalmente, y antes de enfrentarse con su hermano, se postró en tierra siete veces.
4 Pero Esaú corrió a su encuentro, lo estrechó entre sus brazos, y lo besó llorando.
5 Luego dirigió una mirada a su alrededor, y al ver a las mujeres y a los niños, preguntó: «¿Quiénes son estos que están contigo?». «Son los hijos que Dios ha concedido a tu servidor», respondió Jacob.
6 Entonces se le acercaron las esclavas con sus hijos y se postraron ante él.
7 Inmediatamente vino Lía con sus hijos, y también se postraron. Por último se adelantaron José y Raquel, e hicieron lo mismo.
8 Esaú preguntó: «¿Qué intentabas hacer con todo ese ganado que me salió al paso?». «Lograr que mi señor me diera la bienvenida», respondió Jacob.
9 Pero Esaú añadió: «Ya tengo bastante, querido hermano. Quédate con lo que es tuyo».
10 «No, le dijo Jacob; si quieres hacerme un favor, acepta el regalo que te ofrezco, porque ver tu rostro ha sido lo mismo que ver el rostro de Dios, ya que me has recibido tan afectuosamente.
11 Toma el obsequio que te ha sido presentado, porque Dios me ha favorecido y yo tengo todo lo necesario». Y ante tanta insistencia, Esaú aceptó.
La separación de Jacob y Esaú
12 Después Esaú continuó diciendo: «Vámonos de aquí, y yo te serviré de escolta».
13 Pero Jacob respondió: «Mi señor sabe que los niños son delicados. Además, las ovejas y las vacas han tenido cría, y yo debo velar por ellas. Bastará con exigirles un solo día de marcha forzada, para que muera todo el rebaño.
14 Tú sigue adelante, mientras yo avanzo lentamente, al paso de la caravana que me va precediendo, y al paso de los niños. Luego te alcanzaré en Seír».
15 Esaú dijo entonces: «Permíteme al menos que ponga a tu disposición una parte de los hombres que me acompañan». «¿Para qué?», respondió Jacob. «Basta que seas benévolo conmigo».
16 Aquel mismo día, Esaú emprendió el camino de regreso a Seír,
17 mientras que Jacob siguió avanzando hasta Sucot. Allí edificó una casa para él, y chozas para el ganado. Fue por eso que se dio a ese lugar el nombre de Sucot, que significa «Chozas».
La llegada de Jacob a Siquém
18 A su regreso de Padán Aram, Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, y acampó a la vista de la ciudad.
19 Después compró a los hijos de Jamor, el padre de Siquem, por cien monedas de plata, la parcela de campo donde había instalado su campamento.
20 Allí erigió un altar, al que llamó «Dios, Dios de Israel».

Chapter 33
1
Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, accompanied by four hundred men. So he divided his children among Leah, Rachel and the two maidservants,

putting the maids and their children first, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last.

He himself went on ahead of them, bowing to the ground seven times, until he reached his brother.
4
Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, and flinging himself on his neck, kissed him as he wept.
5
When Esau looked about, he saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked. Jacob answered, “They are the children whom God has graciously bestowed on your servant.”

Then the maidservants and their children came forward and bowed low;
7
next, Leah and her children came forward and bowed low; lastly, Rachel and her children came forward and bowed low.

Then Esau asked, “What did you intend with all those droves that I encountered?” Jacob answered, “It was to gain my lord’s favor.”
9
“I have plenty,” replied Esau; “you should keep what is yours, brother.”
10
“No, I beg you!” said Jacob. “If you will do me the favor, please accept this gift from me, since to come into your presence is for me like coming into the presence of God, now that you have received me so kindly.
11
Do accept the present I have brought you; God has been generous toward me, and I have an abundance.” Since he so urged him, Esau accepted.
12
Then Esau said, “Let us break camp and be on our way; I will travel alongside you.”
13
But Jacob replied: “As my lord can see, the children are frail. Besides, I am encumbered with the flocks and herds, which now have sucklings; if overdriven for a single day, the whole flock will die.
14
Let my lord, then, go on ahead of me, while I proceed more slowly at the pace of the livestock before me and at the pace of my children, until I join my lord in Seir.”
15
Esau replied, “Let me at least put at your disposal some of the men who are with me.” But Jacob said, “For what reason? Please indulge me in this, my lord.”

So on the same day that Esau began his journey back to Seir,

1 Jacob journeyed to Succoth. There he built a home for himself and made booths for his livestock. That is why the place was called Succoth.

Having thus come from Paddan-aram, Jacob arrived safely at the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, and he encamped in sight of the city.

2 The plot of ground on which he had pitched his tent he bought for a hundred pieces of bullion from the descendants of Hamor, the founder of Shechem.

He set up a memorial stone there and invoked “El, the God of Israel.”

2 [19] Pieces of bullion: in Hebrew, kesita, a monetary unit of which the value is now unknown. Descendants of Hamor: Hamorites, “the men of Hamor”; cf ⇒ Judges 9:28. Hamor was regarded as the eponymous ancestor of the pre-Israelite inhabitants of Shechem.
