Capítulo 43
El segundo viaje de los hermanos de José a Egipto
1 El hambre continuaba asolando el país.
2 Y cuando se agotaron los víveres que habían traído de Egipto, su padre les dijo: «Regresen a Egipto a comprarnos un poco de comida».
3 Pero Judá le respondió: «Aquel hombre nos advirtió expresamente que no nos presentáramos delante de él, si nuestro hermano no nos acompañaba.
4 Si tú dejas partir a nuestro hermano con nosotros, bajaremos a comprarte comida;
5 pero si no lo dejas, no podremos ir, porque el hombre nos dijo: «No vengan a verme si su hermano no los acompaña».
6 Entonces Israel dijo: «¿Por qué me han causado este dolor, diciendo a este hombre que tenían otro hermano?».
7 Ellos respondieron: «El comenzó a hacernos preguntas sobre nosotros y sobre nuestra familia. «El padre de ustedes ¿vive todavía? ¿Tienen otro hermano?». Nosotros nos limitamos a responder a sus preguntas. ¿Cómo nos íbamos a imaginar que él nos diría: «Traigan aquí a su hermano»?».
8 Entonces Judá dijo a su padre Israel: «Envía al muchacho bajo mi responsabilidad, y ahora mismo nos pondremos en camino para poder sobrevivir. De lo contrario moriremos nosotros, tú y nuestros niños.
9 Yo respondo por él, y tendrás que pedirme cuentas a mí. Si no te lo traigo y lo pongo delante de tus ojos, seré culpable ante ti todo el resto de mi vida.
10 Ya estaríamos de vuelta dos veces, si no nos hubiéramos entretenido tanto».
11 Ya que tiene que ser así, continuó diciendo Israel, hagan lo siguiente: Pongan en sus equipajes los mejores productos del país, y regalen a aquel hombre un poco de bálsamo y un poco de miel, goma tragacanto, mirra, nueces y almendras.
12 Tomen además una doble cantidad de dinero, porque ustedes tendrán que restituir la suma que les pusieron junto a la abertura de la bolsa. Tal vez se trate de una equivocación.
13 Lleven también a su hermano, y vuelvan cuanto antes a ver a ese hombre.
14 Que el Dios Todopoderoso lo mueva a compadecerse de ustedes, y él les permita traer a su hermano, lo mismo que a Benjamín. Yo, por mi parte, si tengo que verme privado de mis hijos, estoy dispuesto a soportarlo».
15 Ellos recogieron los regalos, tomaron una doble cantidad de dinero, y bajaron a Egipto llevándose a Benjamín. En seguida fueron a presentarse delante de José,
16 y cuando este vio que venían con Benjamín, dijo a su mayordomo: «Lleva a estos hombres a casa. Mata un animal y prepáralo, porque hoy al mediodía comerán conmigo».
17 El mayordomo hizo lo que José le había ordenado y los condujo hasta la casa.
18 Pero ellos, al ser llevados a la casa de José, se llenaron de temor y dijeron: «Nos traen aquí a causa del dinero que fue puesto en nuestras bolsas la vez anterior. No es más que un pretexto para atacarnos y convertirnos en esclavos, junto con nuestros animales».
19 Entonces se acercaron al mayordomo de José y le hablaron a la entrada de la casa,
20 diciéndole: «Perdón, señor, nosotros ya estuvimos aquí una vez para abastecernos de víveres.
21 Pero cuando acampamos para pasar la noche, abrimos nuestras bolsas y resultó que el dinero de cada uno estaba junto a la abertura de su bolsa. Era exactamente la misma cantidad que habíamos pagado. Ahora tenemos esa suma aquí con nosotros,
22 y además hemos traído dinero para adquirir nuevas provisiones. No sabemos quién puso el dinero en nuestras bolsas».
23 Pero él respondió: «Quédense tranquilos, no teman. Su Dios y el Dios de su padre les puso ese dinero en las bolsas. La suma que ustedes pagaron está en mi poder». Y en seguida les presentó a Simeón.
24 El mayordomo introdujo a los hombres en la casa de José, les trajo agua para que se lavaran los pies y les dio pasto para los animales.
25 Ellos prepararon los regalos, esperando la llegada de José al mediodía, porque ya les había avisado que comería allí.
El segundo encuentro de José con sus hermanos
26 Cuando José entró en la casa, le presentaron los regalos que traían y se postraron ante él con el rostro en tierra.
27 José los saludó y les dijo: «El anciano padre de que me hablaron, ¿vive todavía? ¿Cómo está?».
28 «Nuestro padre, tu servidor, vive todavía y goza de buena salud», le respondieron; e inclinándose, se postraron.
29 Al levantar los ojos, José vio a Benjamín, el hijo de su misma madre, y preguntó: «¿Es este el hermano menor de que me habían hablado?». Y añadió: «Que Dios te favorezca, hijo mío».
30 José salió precipitadamente porque se conmovió a la vista de su hermano y no podía contener las lágrimas. Entró en una habitación y lloró.
31 Después se lavó la cara, volvió y, tratando de dominarse, ordenó que sirvieran la comida.
32 Sirvieron en mesas separadas a José, a sus hermanos, y a los egipcios que comían con él, porque los egipcios no pueden comer con los hebreos: es una abominación para ellos.
33 Cuando se sentaron frente a José, por orden de edad, de mayor a menor, sus hermanos se miraron con asombro unos a otros.
34 El les hizo servir de su misma mesa, y la porción de Benjamín era varias veces mayor que la de los demás. Todos bebieron y se alegraron con él.

Chapter 43
1
1 Now the famine in the land grew more severe.
2
So when they had used up all the rations they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and procure us a little more food.”
3
But Judah replied: “The man strictly warned us, ‘You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.’
4
If you are willing to let our brother go with us, we will go down to procure food for you.
5
But if you are not willing, we will not go down, because the man told us, ‘You shall not appear in my presence unless your brother is with you.'”
6
Israel demanded, “Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man that you had another brother?”
7
They answered: “The man kept asking about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?’ We had to answer his questions. How could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

Then Judah urged his father Israel: “Let the boy go with me, that we may be off and on our way if you and we and our children are to keep from starving to death.
9
I myself will stand surety for him. You can hold me responsible for him. If I fail to bring him back, to set him in your presence, you can hold it against me forever.
10
Had we not dilly-dallied, we could have been there and back twice by now!”

Their father Israel then told them: “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the land’s best products in your baggage and take them down to the man as gifts: some balm and honey, gum and resin, and pistachios and almonds.
12
Also take extra money along, for you must return the amount that was put back in the mouths of your bags; it may have been a mistake.
13
Take your brother, too, and be off on your way back to the man.
14
May God Almighty dispose the man to be merciful toward you, so that he may let your other brother go, as well as Benjamin. As for me, if I am to suffer bereavement, I shall suffer it.”
15
So the men got the gifts, took double the amount of money with them, and, accompanied by Benjamin, were off on their way down to Egypt to present themselves to Joseph.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he told his head steward, “Take these men into the house, and have an animal slaughtered and prepared, for they are to dine with me at noon.”
17
Doing as Joseph had ordered, the steward conducted the men to Joseph’s house.
18
But on being led to his house, they became apprehensive. “It must be,” they thought, “on account of the money put back in our bags the first time, that we are taken inside; they want to use it as a pretext to attack us and take our donkeys and seize us as slaves.”
19
So they went up to Joseph’s head steward and talked to him at the entrance of the house.
20
“If you please, sir,” they said, “we came down here once before to procure food.
21
But when we arrived at a night’s encampment and opened our bags, there was each man’s money in the mouth of his bag – our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back.
22
We have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who put the first money in our bags.”
23
“Be at ease,” he replied; “you have no need to fear. Your God and the God of your father must have put treasures in your bags for you. As for your money, I received it.” With that, he led Simeon out to them.
24
The steward then brought the men inside Joseph’s house. He gave them water to bathe their feet, and got fodder for their donkeys.
25
Then they set out their gifts to await Joseph’s arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to dine there.
26
When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, while they bowed down before him to the ground.
27
After inquiring how they were, he asked them, “And how is your aged father, of whom you spoke? Is he still in good health?”
28
“Your servant our father is thriving and still in good health,” they said, as they bowed respectfully.
29
When Joseph’s eye fell on his full brother Benjamin, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you told me?” Then he said to him, “May God be gracious to you, my boy!”
30
With that, Joseph had to hurry out, for he was so overcome with affection for his brother that he was on the verge of tears. He went into a private room and wept there.

After washing his face, he reappeared and, now in control of himself, gave the order, “Serve the meal.”

2 It was served separately to him, to the brothers, and to the Egyptians who partook of his board. (Egyptians may not eat with Hebrews; that is abhorrent to them.)

When they were seated by his directions according to their age, from the oldest to the youngest, they looked at one another in amazement;
34
3 and as portions were brought to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as large as anyone else’s. So they drank freely and made merry with him.
1 [1-34] This chapter and the following one are from the Yahwist source, in which Judah, not Reuben as in the Elohist source, volunteers to go surety for Benjamin.
