Capítulo 48

La bendición de Efraím y Manasés

1 Después de estos acontecimientos, José recibió esta noticia: «Tu padre está enfermo». Entonces llevó a sus dos hijos, Manasés y Efraím,

2 y se hizo anunciar a su padre: «Tu hijo José ha venido a verte». Israel, haciendo un esfuerzo, se sentó en su lecho,

3 y dijo a José: «El Dios Todopoderoso se me apareció, en Luz, en la tierra de Canaán, y me bendijo,

4 diciendo: «Yo te haré fecundo y numeroso, haré nacer de ti una asamblea de pueblos, y daré esta tierra a tu descendencia después de ti, en posesión perpetua».

5 Ahora bien, los dos hijos que tuviste en Egipto antes que yo viniera a reunirme contigo, serán mis hijos. Efraím y Manasés serán míos, como lo son Rubén y Simeón.

6 Los que nacieron después de ellos, en cambio, serán tuyos, y serán llamados con el nombre de sus hermanos para recibir su herencia.

7 Yo quiero que así sea, porque a mi regreso de Padán, mientras íbamos por la tierra de Canaán, a poca distancia de Efratá, se me murió tu madre Raquel, y yo la sepulté allí, junto al camino de Efratá, es decir, de Belén».

8 Al ver a los hijos de José, Israel preguntó: «Y estos, ¿quiénes son?».

9 «Son mis hijos, los que Dios me dio aquí», respondió José a su padre. Este añadió: «Acércamelos, para que yo los bendiga».

10 José los puso junto a Israel, que ya no veía, porque sus ojos se habían debilitado a causa de su edad avanzada, y él los besó y los abrazó.

11 Luego Israel dijo a José: «Yo pensaba que nunca más volvería a ver tu rostro, y ahora Dios me permite ver también tu descendencia».

12 José los retiró de las rodillas de Israel y se inclinó profundamente;

13 después los tomó a los dos, a Efraím con su mano derecha, para que estuviera a la izquierda de Israel, y a Manasés con su mano izquierda, para que estuviera a la derecha de Israel, y se los presentó.

14 Pero Israel, entrecruzando sus manos, puso la derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraím, que era el menor, y la izquierda sobre la cabeza de Manasés, aunque este era el primogénito,

15 y los bendijo, diciendo: «El Dios en cuya presencia caminaron mis padres, Abraham e Isaac, el Dios que fue mi pastor, desde mi nacimiento hasta el día de hoy,

16 el ángel que me rescató de todo mal, bendiga a estos jóvenes, para que en ellos sobreviva mi nombre y el de mis padres, Abraham e Isaac, y lleguen a ser una gran multitud sobre la tierra».

17 Cuando José advirtió que su padre tenía puesta la mano derecha sobre la cabeza de Efraím, no le pareció bien. Entonces tomó la mano de su padre para pasarla de la cabeza de Efraím a la de Manasés,

18 y dijo a su padre: «Así no, padre, porque el primogénito es el otro; coloca tu mano derecha sobre su cabeza».

19 Pero su padre se resistió con estas palabras: «Ya lo sé, hijo mío, ya lo sé. También de él nacerá un pueblo, y también él será grande. Pero su hermano menor lo aventajará, y de él descenderán naciones enteras».

20 Y aquel día pronunció sobre ellos esta bendición: «Por ti Israel pronunciará esta bendición: ¡Que Dios te haga como Efraím y Manasés!». Y puso a Efraím delante de Manasés.

21 Finalmente, Israel dijo a José: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios estará con ustedes y los hará volver a la tierra de sus padres.

22 Yo, por mi parte, te doy una franja de tierra más que a tus hermanos, la que arrebaté a los amorreos con mi espada y con mi arco».

Chapter 48

Some time afterward, Joseph was informed, “Your father is failing.” So he took along with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” he rallied his strength and sat up in bed.

¹ Jacob then said to Joseph: “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessing me,

he said, ‘I will make you fertile and numerous and raise you into an assembly of tribes, and I will give this land to your descendants after you as a permanent possession.’

Your two sons, therefore, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I joined you here, shall be mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine as much as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Progeny born to you after them shall remain yours; but their heritage shall be recorded in the names of their two brothers.

² I do this because, when I was returning from Paddan, your mother Rachel died, to my sorrow, during the journey in Canaan, while we were still a short distance from Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he asked, “Who are these?”

“They are my sons,” Joseph answered his father, “whom God has given me here.” “Bring them to me,” said his father, “that I may bless them.”

(Now Israel’s eyes were dim from age, and he could not see well.) When Joseph brought his sons close to him, he kissed and embraced them.

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your descendants as well!”

Joseph removed them from his father’s knees and bowed down before him with his face to the ground.

Then Joseph took the two, Ephraim with his right hand, to Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand, to Israel’s right, and led them to him.

But Israel, crossing his hands, put out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, although he was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, although he was the first-born.

Then he blessed them with these words: “May the God in whose ways my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd from my birth to this day,

The Angel who has delivered me from all harm, bless these boys That in them my name be recalled, and the names of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, And they may become teeming multitudes upon the earth!”

When Joseph saw that his father had laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, this seemed wrong to him; so he took hold of his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s,

saying, “That is not right, father; the other one is the first-born; lay your right hand on his head!”

But his father resisted. “I know it, son,” he said, “I know. That one too shall become a tribe, and he too shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall surpass him, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

So when he blessed them that day and said, “By you shall the people of Israel pronounce blessings; may they say, ‘God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh,'” he placed Ephraim before Manasseh.

Then Israel said to Joseph: “I am about to die. But God will be with you and will restore you to the land of your fathers.

³ As for me, I give to you, as to the one above his brothers, Shechem, which I captured from the Amorites with my sword and bow.”

2 [7] Since her early death prevented Rachel from bearing more than two sons, Jacob feels justified in treating her two grandsons as if they were her own offspring.

3 [22] Both the meaning of the Hebrew and the historical reference in this verse are obscure. By taking the Hebrew word for Shechem as a common noun meaning shoulder or mountain slope, some translators render the verse, “I give you one portion more than your brothers, which I captured. . .” The reference may be to the capture of Shechem by the sons of Jacob (⇒ Genesis 34:24-29). Shechem lay near the border separating the tribal territory of Manasseh from that of Ephraim (⇒ Joshua 16:4-9; ⇒ 17:1-2, 7).
