PRIMERA LECTURA
Los dos profetas fueron un tormento para los habitantes de la tierra
Lectura del libro del Apocalipsis 11, 4-12
Me fue dicho a mí, Juan:
«Aquí están dos testigos míos, estos son los dos olivos y los dos candelabros que están ante el Señor de la tierra. Y si alguien quiere hacerles daño, sale un fuego de su boca y devora a sus enemigos; y si alguien quisiera hacerles daño, es necesario que muera de esa manera. Estos tienen el poder de cerrar el cielo, para que no caiga lluvia durante los días de su profecía, y tienen poder sobre las aguas para convertirlas en sangre y para herir la tierra con toda clase de plagas siempre que quieran.
Y cuando hayan terminado su testimonio, la bestia que sube del abismo les hará la guerra y los vencerá y los matará. Y sus cadáveres yacerán en la plaza de la gran ciudad, que se llama espiritualmente Sodoma y Egipto, donde también su Señor fue crucificado. Y gentes de los pueblos, tribus, lenguas y naciones contemplan sus cadáveres durante tres días y medio y no permiten que sus cadáveres sean puestos en un sepulcro. Y los habitantes de la tierra se alegran por ellos y se regocijan y se enviarán regalos unos a otros, porque los dos profetas fueron un tormento para los habitantes de la tierra». Y después de tres días y medio, un espíritu de vida procedente de Dios entró en ellos, y se pusieron de pie, y un gran temor cayó sobre quienes los contemplaban. Y oyeron una gran voz del cielo, que les decía:
«Subid aquí».
Y subieron al cielo en una nube, y sus enemigos se quedaron mirándolos.

que adiestra mis manos para el combate,
mis dedos para la pelea. R.

mi escudo y mi refugio,
que me somete los pueblos. R.

No es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos
Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Lucas 20, 27-40
En aquel tiempo, se acercaron algunos saduceos, los que dicen que no hay resurrección y preguntaron a Jesús:
«Maestro, Moisés nos dejó escrito: “Si a uno se le muere su hermano, dejando mujer, pero sin hijos, que tome la mujer como esposa y dé descendencia a su hermano.” Pues bien, había siete hermanos: el primero se casó y murió sin hijos. El segundo y el tercero se casaron con ella, y así los siete, y murieron todos sin dejar hijos. Por último, también murió la mujer. Cuando llegue la resurrección, ¿de cuál de ellos será la
mujer? Porque los siete la tuvieron como mujer». Jesús les dijo:
«En este mundo los hombres se casan y las mujeres toman esposo, pero los que sean juzgados dignos de tomar parte en el mundo futuro y en la resurrección de entre los muertos no se casarán ni ellas serán dadas en matrimonio. Pues ya no pueden morir, ya que son como ángeles; y son hijos de Dios, porque son hijos de la resurrección. Y que lo muertos resucitan, lo indicó el mismo Moisés en el episodio de la zarza, cuando llama al Señor “Dios de Abrahán, Dios de Isaac, Dios de Jacob”. No es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos; porque para él todos están vivos»
Intervinieron unos escribas:
«Bien dicho, Maestro».
Y no se atrevían a hacerle más preguntas.

RV 11:4-12
I, John, heard a voice from heaven speak to me:
Here are my two witnesses:
These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands
that stand before the Lord of the earth.
If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths
and devours their enemies.
In this way, anyone wanting to harm them is sure to be slain.
They have the power to close up the sky
so that no rain can fall during the time of their prophesying.
They also have power to turn water into blood
and to afflict the earth with any plague as often as they wish.
When they have finished their testimony,
the beast that comes up from the abyss
will wage war against them and conquer them and kill them.
Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city,
which has the symbolic names “Sodom” and “Egypt,”
where indeed their Lord was crucified.
Those from every people, tribe, tongue, and nation
will gaze on their corpses for three and a half days,
and they will not allow their corpses to be buried.
The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them
and be glad and exchange gifts
because these two prophets tormented the inhabitants of the earth.
But after the three and a half days,
a breath of life from God entered them.
When they stood on their feet, great fear fell on those who saw them.
Then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, “Come up here.”
So they went up to heaven in a cloud as their enemies looked on.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

LK 20:27-40
Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection,
came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying,
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone’s brother dies leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers;
the first married a woman but died childless.
Then the second and the third married her,
and likewise all the seven died childless.
Finally the woman also died.
Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be?
For all seven had been married to her.”
Jesus said to them,
“The children of this age marry and remarry;
but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age
and to the resurrection of the dead
neither marry nor are given in marriage.
They can no longer die,
for they are like angels;
and they are the children of God
because they are the ones who will rise.
That the dead will rise
even Moses made known in the passage about the bush,
when he called ‘Lord’
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
and he is not God of the dead, but of the living,
for to him all are alive.”
Some of the scribes said in reply,
“Teacher, you have answered well.”
And they no longer dared to ask him anything.

Born into the Polish nobility in the late 19th century, Franciszka Siedliska overcame poor health and her father’s plans for her to marry, in order to become a nun. In religion, she took the name Maria of Jesus of the Good Shepherd. In 1873 she founded the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
