In those days, God delivered all these commandments:
“I, the LORD, am your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
You shall not have other gods besides me.
You shall not carve idols for yourselves
in the shape of anything in the sky above
or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;
you shall not bow down before them or worship them.
For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God,
inflicting punishment for their fathers’ wickedness
on the children of those who hate me,
down to the third and fourth generation;
but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation
on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

“You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain.
For the LORD will not leave unpunished
the one who takes his name in vain.

“Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
Six days you may labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God.
No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter,
or your male or female slave, or your beast,
or by the alien who lives with you.
In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,
the sea and all that is in them;

Brothers and sisters:
Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
but we proclaim Christ crucified,
a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,
and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to John
Jn 2:13-25

Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves,
as well as the money changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
“Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
“What sign can you show us for doing this?”
Jesus answered and said to them,
“Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
The Jews said,
“This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days?”
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.

While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
many began to believe in his name
when they saw the signs he was doing.
But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all,
and did not need anyone to testify about human nature.
He himself understood it well.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER

It is very harmful when the Church goes astray with this manner of making the house of God a house of trade. These words help us to reject the danger of also making our soul, which is God’s dwelling place, a house of trade, by living in constant search of our personal interests instead of generous and supportive love. (…) It is a common temptation to exploit good, sometimes dutiful deeds in order to cultivate private, if not entirely illicit interests. (…) This is why Jesus used “a harsh approach” that time, in order to shake us from this mortal danger. (Angelus, 4 March 2018)

From the Gospel according to Luke
Lk 15:1-3, 11-32

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So to them Jesus addressed this parable.
“A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father,
‘Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’
So the father divided the property between them.
After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings
and set off to a distant country
where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything,
a severe famine struck that country,
and he found himself in dire need.
So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens
who sent him to his farm to tend the swine.
And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed,
but nobody gave him any.
Coming to his senses he thought,
‘How many of my father’s hired workers
have more than enough food to eat,
but here am I, dying from hunger.
I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him,
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
I no longer deserve to be called your son;
treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.”’
So he got up and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off,
his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion.
He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
His son said to him,
‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you;
I no longer deserve to be called your son.’
But his father ordered his servants,
‘Quickly, bring the finest robe and put it on him;
put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
Take the fattened calf and slaughter it.
Then let us celebrate with a feast,
because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again;
he was lost, and has been found.’
Then the celebration began.
Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house,
he heard the sound of music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean.
The servant said to him,
‘Your brother has returned
and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf
because he has him back safe and sound.’
He became angry,
and when he refused to enter the house,
his father came out and pleaded with him.
He said to his father in reply,
‘Look, all these years I served you
and not once did I disobey your orders;
yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends.
But when your son returns
who swallowed up your property with prostitutes,
for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’
He said to him,
‘My son, you are here with me always;
everything I have is yours.
But now we must celebrate and rejoice,
because your brother was dead and has come to life again;
he was lost and has been found.’”

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
“Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.
When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat,
another they killed, and a third they stoned.
Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones,
but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his son to them,
thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another,
‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?”
They answered him,
“He will put those wretched men to a wretched death
and lease his vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the proper times.”
Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures:

The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?

Therefore, I say to you,
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they knew that he was speaking about them.
And although they were attempting to arrest him,
they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

33 Escuchen otra parábola: Un hombre poseía una tierra y allí plantó una viña, la cercó, cavó un lagar y construyó una torre de vigilancia. Después la arrendó a unos viñadores y se fue al extranjero.

34 Cuando llegó el tiempo de la vendimia, envió a sus servidores para percibir los frutos.

35 Pero los viñadores se apoderaron de ellos, y a uno lo golpearon, a otro lo mataron y al tercero lo apedrearon.

36 El propietario volvió a enviar a otros servidores, en mayor número que los primeros, pero los trataron de la misma manera.

37 Finalmente, les envió a su propio hijo, pensando: “Respetarán a mi hijo”.

38 Pero, al verlo, los viñadores se dijeron: “Este es el heredero: vamos a matarlo para quedarnos con su herencia”.

39 Y apoderándose de él, lo arrojaron fuera de la viña y lo mataron.

40 Cuando vuelve el dueño, ¿qué les parece que hará con aquellos viñadores?».

41 Le respondieron: «Acabará con esos miserables y arrendará la viña a otros, que le entregarán el fruto a su debido tiempo».

42 Jesús agregó: «¿No han leído nunca en las Escrituras: “La piedra que los constructores rechazaron ha llegado a ser la piedra angular: esta es la obra del Señor, admirable a nuestros ojos”?

43 Por eso les digo que el Reino de Dios les será quitado a ustedes, para ser entregado a un pueblo que le hará producir sus frutos».

45 Los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos, al oír estas parábolas, comprendieron que se refería a ellos.

46 Entonces buscaron el modo de detenerlo, pero temían a la multitud, que lo consideraba un profeta.

Lecture du livre de la Genèse
(Gn 37, 3-4.12-13a.17b-28)

Israël, c’est-à-dire Jacob,
aimait Joseph plus que tous ses autres enfants,
parce qu’il était le fils de sa vieillesse,
et il lui fit faire une tunique de grand prix.
En voyant qu’il leur préférait Joseph,
ses autres fils se mirent à détester celui-ci,
et ils ne pouvaient plus lui parler sans hostilité.

Les frères de Joseph étaient allés à Sichem
faire paître le troupeau de leur père.
Israël dit à Joseph :
« Tes frères ne gardent-ils pas le troupeau à Sichem ?
Va donc les trouver de ma part ! »
Joseph les trouva à Dotane.
Ceux-ci l’aperçurent de loin et, avant qu’il arrive près d’eux,
ils complotèrent de le faire mourir.
Ils se dirent l’un à l’autre :
« Voici l’expert en songes qui arrive !
C’est le moment, allons-y, tuons-le,
et jetons-le dans une de ces citernes.
Nous dirons qu’une bête féroce l’a dévoré,
et on verra ce que voulaient dire ses songes ! »
Mais Roubène les entendit, et voulut le sauver de leurs mains.
Il leur dit :
« Ne touchons pas à sa vie. »
Et il ajouta :
« Ne répandez pas son sang :
jetez-le dans cette citerne du désert,
mais ne portez pas la main sur lui. »
Il voulait le sauver de leurs mains
et le ramener à son père.

Dès que Joseph eut rejoint ses frères,
ils le dépouillèrent de sa tunique,
la tunique de grand prix qu’il portait,
ils se saisirent de lui et le jetèrent dans la citerne,
qui était vide et sans eau.
Ils s’assirent ensuite pour manger.
En levant les yeux, ils virent une caravane d’Ismaélites
qui venait de Galaad.
Leurs chameaux étaient chargés d’aromates,
de baume et de myrrhe
qu’ils allaient livrer en Égypte.
Alors Juda dit à ses frères :
« Quel profit aurions-nous à tuer notre frère
et à dissimuler sa mort ?
Vendons-le plutôt aux Ismaélites
et ne portons pas la main sur lui,
car il est notre frère,
notre propre chair. »
Ses frères l’écoutèrent.
Des marchands madianites qui passaient par là
retirèrent Joseph de la citerne,
ils le vendirent pour vingt pièces d’argent aux Ismaélites,
et ceux-ci l’emmenèrent en Égypte.

ÉVANGILE DU JOUR

En ce temps-là,
Jésus disait aux grands prêtres et aux anciens du peuple :
« Écoutez cette parabole :
Un homme était propriétaire d’un domaine ;
il planta une vigne,
l’entoura d’une clôture,
y creusa un pressoir et bâtit une tour de garde.
Puis il loua cette vigne à des vignerons,
et partit en voyage.
Quand arriva le temps des fruits,
il envoya ses serviteurs auprès des vignerons
pour se faire remettre le produit de sa vigne.
Mais les vignerons se saisirent des serviteurs,
frappèrent l’un,
tuèrent l’autre,
lapidèrent le troisième.
De nouveau, le propriétaire envoya d’autres serviteurs
plus nombreux que les premiers ;
mais on les traita de la même façon.
Finalement, il leur envoya son fils,
en se disant :
“Ils respecteront mon fils.”
Mais, voyant le fils, les vignerons se dirent entre eux :
“Voici l’héritier : venez ! tuons-le,
nous aurons son héritage !”
Ils se saisirent de lui,
le jetèrent hors de la vigne
et le tuèrent.
Eh bien ! quand le maître de la vigne viendra,
que fera-t-il à ces vignerons ? »
On lui répond :
« Ces misérables, il les fera périr misérablement.
Il louera la vigne à d’autres vignerons,
qui lui en remettront le produit en temps voulu. »
Jésus leur dit :
« N’avez-vous jamais lu dans les Écritures :
La pierre qu’ont rejetée les bâtisseurs
est devenue la pierre d’angle :
c’est là l’œuvre du Seigneur,
la merveille devant nos yeux !
Aussi, je vous le dis :
Le royaume de Dieu vous sera enlevé
pour être donné à une nation
qui lui fera produire ses fruits. »

En entendant les paraboles de Jésus,
les grands prêtres et les pharisiens
avaient bien compris qu’il parlait d’eux.
Tout en cherchant à l’arrêter,
ils eurent peur des foules,
parce qu’elles le tenaient pour un prophète.

Israel amava mais a José do que a todos os outros filhos, porque lhe tinha nascido na velhice. E por isso mandou fazer para ele uma túnica de mangas longas. Vendo os irmãos que o pai o amava mais do que a todos eles, odiavam-no e já não lhe podiam falar pacificamente.

Ora, como os irmãos de José tinham ido apascentar o rebanho do pai em Siquém, disse Israel a José: “Teus irmãos devem estar com os rebanhos em Siquém. Vem, vou enviar-te a eles”.

Partiu, pois, José atrás de seus irmãos e encontrou-os em Dotaim. Eles, porém, tendo-o visto ao longe, antes que se aproximasse, tramaram a sua morte. Disseram entre si: “Aí vem o sonhador! Vamos matá-lo e lançá-lo numa cisterna, depois diremos que um animal feroz o devorou. Assim veremos de que lhe servem os sonhos”.

Rúben, porém, ouvindo isto, disse-lhes: “Não lhe tiremos a vida!” E acrescentou: “Não derrameis sangue, mas lançai-o naquela cisterna do deserto, e não o toqueis com as vossas mãos”. Dizia isto, porque queria livrá-lo das mãos deles e devolvê-lo ao pai. Assim que José chegou perto dos irmãos, estes despojaram-no da túnica de mangas longas, pegaram nele e lançaram-no numa cisterna que não tinha água. Depois, sentaram-se para comer. Levantando os olhos, avistaram uma caravana de ismaelitas, que se aproximava, proveniente de Galaad. Os camelos iam carregados de especiarias, bálsamo e resina, que transportavam para o Egito.

E Judá disse aos irmãos: “Que proveito teríamos em matar nosso irmão e ocultar o seu sangue? É melhor vendê-lo a esses ismaelitas e não manchar nossas mãos, pois ele é nosso irmão e nossa carne”. Concordaram os irmãos com o que dizia.

Ao passarem os comerciantes madianitas, tiraram José da cisterna, e por vinte moedas de prata o venderam aos ismaelitas: e estes o levaram para o Egito.

Israel liebte Josef unter allen seinen Söhnen am meisten, weil er ihm noch in hohem Alter geboren worden war. Er ließ ihm einen Ärmelrock machen.
Als seine Brüder sahen, dass ihr Vater ihn mehr liebte als alle seine Brüder, hassten sie ihn und konnten mit ihm kein gutes Wort mehr reden.
Als seine Brüder fortgezogen waren, um das Vieh ihres Vaters bei Sichem zu weiden,
sagte Israel zu Josef: Deine Brüder weiden bei Sichem das Vieh. Geh, ich will dich zu ihnen schicken.
Da ging Josef seinen Brüdern nach und fand sie in Dotan.
Sie sahen ihn von weitem. Bevor er jedoch nahe an sie herangekommen war, fassten sie den Plan, ihn umzubringen.
Sie sagten zueinander: Dort kommt ja dieser Träumer.
Jetzt aber auf, erschlagen wir ihn, und werfen wir ihn in eine der Zisternen. Sagen wir, ein wildes Tier habe ihn gefressen. Dann werden wir ja sehen, was aus seinen Träumen wird.
Ruben hörte das und wollte ihn aus ihrer Hand retten. Er sagte: Begehen wir doch keinen Mord.
Und Ruben sagte zu ihnen: Vergießt kein Blut! Werft ihn in die Zisterne da in der Steppe, aber legt nicht Hand an ihn! Er wollte ihn nämlich aus ihrer Hand retten und zu seinem Vater zurückbringen.
Als Josef bei seinen Brüdern angekommen war, zogen sie ihm sein Gewand aus, den Ärmelrock, den er anhatte,
packten ihn und warfen ihn in die Zisterne. Die Zisterne war leer; es war kein Wasser darin.
Als sie dann beim Essen saßen und aufblickten, sahen sie, dass gerade eine Karawane von Ismaelitern aus Gilead kam. Ihre Kamele waren mit Tragakant, Mastix und Ladanum beladen. Sie waren unterwegs nach Ägypten.
Da schlug Juda seinen Brüdern vor: Was haben wir davon, wenn wir unseren Bruder erschlagen und sein Blut zudecken?
Kommt, verkaufen wir ihn den Ismaelitern. Wir wollen aber nicht Hand an ihn legen, denn er ist doch unser Bruder und unser Verwandter. Seine Brüder waren einverstanden.
Midianitische Kaufleute kamen vorbei. Da zogen sie Josef aus der Zisterne heraus und verkauften ihn für zwanzig Silberstücke an die Ismaeliter. Diese brachten Josef nach Ägypten.

Mt 21, 33-43.45-46

In jener Zeit sprach Jesus zu den Hohenpriestern und den Ältesten des Volkes:
Hört noch ein anderes Gleichnis: Es war ein Gutsbesitzer, der legte einen Weinberg an, zog ringsherum einen Zaun, hob eine Kelter aus und baute einen Turm. Dann verpachtete er den Weinberg an Winzer und reiste in ein anderes Land.
Als nun die Erntezeit kam, schickte er seine Knechte zu den Winzern, um seinen Anteil an den Früchten holen zu lassen.
Die Winzer aber packten seine Knechte; den einen prügelten sie, den andern brachten sie um, einen dritten steinigten sie.
Darauf schickte er andere Knechte, mehr als das erste Mal; mit ihnen machten sie es genauso.
Zuletzt sandte er seinen Sohn zu ihnen; denn er dachte: Vor meinem Sohn werden sie Achtung haben.
Als die Winzer den Sohn sahen, sagten sie zueinander: Das ist der Erbe. Auf, wir wollen ihn töten, damit wir seinen Besitz erben.
Und sie packten ihn, warfen ihn aus dem Weinberg hinaus und brachten ihn um.
Wenn nun der Besitzer des Weinbergs kommt: Was wird er mit solchen Winzern tun?
Sie sagten zu ihm: Er wird diesen bösen Menschen ein böses Ende bereiten und den Weinberg an andere Winzer verpachten, die ihm die Früchte abliefern, wenn es Zeit dafür ist.
Und Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Habt ihr nie in der Schrift gelesen: Der Stein, den die Bauleute verworfen haben, er ist zum Eckstein geworden; das hat der Herr vollbracht, vor unseren Augen geschah dieses Wunder?
Darum sage ich euch: Das Reich Gottes wird euch weggenommen und einem Volk gegeben werden, das die erwarteten Früchte bringt.
Als die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer seine Gleichnisse hörten, merkten sie, dass er von ihnen sprach.
Sie hätten ihn gern verhaften lassen; aber sie fürchteten sich vor den Leuten, weil alle ihn für einen Propheten hielten.

“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man’s table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.’
Abraham replied, ‘My child,
remember that you received what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing
who might wish to go from our side to yours
or from your side to ours.’
He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him
to my father’s house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.’
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.’
He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
Then Abraham said,
‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded
if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Lecture du livre du prophète Jérémie
(Jr 17, 5-10)

Ainsi parle le Seigneur :
Maudit soit l’homme
qui met sa foi dans un mortel,
qui s’appuie sur un être de chair,
tandis que son cœur se détourne du Seigneur.
Il sera comme un buisson sur une terre désolée,
il ne verra pas venir le bonheur.
Il aura pour demeure les lieux arides du désert,
une terre salée, inhabitable.

Béni soit l’homme
qui met sa foi dans le Seigneur,
dont le Seigneur est la confiance.
Il sera comme un arbre, planté près des eaux,
qui pousse, vers le courant, ses racines.
Il ne craint pas quand vient la chaleur :
son feuillage reste vert.
L’année de la sécheresse, il est sans inquiétude :
il ne manque pas de porter du fruit.

Rien n’est plus faux que le cœur de l’homme,
il est incurable.
Qui peut le connaître ?
Moi, le Seigneur, qui pénètre les cœurs
et qui scrute les reins,
afin de rendre à chacun selon sa conduite,
selon le fruit de ses actes.

En ce temps-là,
Jésus disait aux pharisiens :
« Il y avait un homme riche,
vêtu de pourpre et de lin fin,
qui faisait chaque jour des festins somptueux.
Devant son portail gisait un pauvre nommé Lazare,
qui était couvert d’ulcères.
Il aurait bien voulu se rassasier
de ce qui tombait de la table du riche ;
mais les chiens, eux, venaient lécher ses ulcères.
Or le pauvre mourut,
et les anges l’emportèrent auprès d’Abraham.
Le riche mourut aussi,
et on l’enterra.
Au séjour des morts, il était en proie à la torture ;
levant les yeux,
il vit Abraham de loin et Lazare tout près de lui.
Alors il cria :
“Père Abraham,
prends pitié de moi
et envoie Lazare tremper le bout de son doigt dans l’eau
pour me rafraîchir la langue,
car je souffre terriblement dans cette fournaise.
– Mon enfant, répondit Abraham,
rappelle-toi :
tu as reçu le bonheur pendant ta vie,
et Lazare, le malheur pendant la sienne.
Maintenant, lui, il trouve ici la consolation,
et toi, la souffrance.
Et en plus de tout cela, un grand abîme
a été établi entre vous et nous,
pour que ceux qui voudraient passer vers vous
ne le puissent pas,
et que, de là-bas non plus, on ne traverse pas vers nous.”
Le riche répliqua :
“Eh bien ! père, je te prie d’envoyer Lazare
dans la maison de mon père.
En effet, j’ai cinq frères :
qu’il leur porte son témoignage,
de peur qu’eux aussi ne viennent
dans ce lieu de torture !”
Abraham lui dit :
“Ils ont Moïse et les Prophètes :
qu’ils les écoutent !
– Non, père Abraham, dit-il,
mais si quelqu’un de chez les morts vient les trouver,
ils se convertiront.”
Abraham répondit :
“S’ils n’écoutent pas Moïse ni les Prophètes,
quelqu’un pourra bien ressusciter d’entre les morts : ils ne seront pas convaincus.” »

In jener Zeit sprach Jesus:
Es war einmal ein reicher Mann, der sich in Purpur und feines Leinen kleidete und Tag für Tag herrlich und in Freuden lebte.
Vor der Tür des Reichen aber lag ein armer Mann namens Lazarus, dessen Leib voller Geschwüre war.
Er hätte gern seinen Hunger mit dem gestillt, was vom Tisch des Reichen herunterfiel. Stattdessen kamen die Hunde und leckten an seinen Geschwüren.
Als nun der Arme starb, wurde er von den Engeln in Abrahams Schoß getragen. Auch der Reiche starb und wurde begraben.
In der Unterwelt, wo er qualvolle Schmerzen litt, blickte er auf und sah von weitem Abraham, und Lazarus in seinem Schoß.
Da rief er: Vater Abraham, hab Erbarmen mit mir, und schick Lazarus zu mir; er soll wenigstens die Spitze seines Fingers ins Wasser tauchen und mir die Zunge kühlen, denn ich leide große Qual in diesem Feuer.
Abraham erwiderte: Mein Kind, denk daran, dass du schon zu Lebzeiten deinen Anteil am Guten erhalten hast, Lazarus aber nur Schlechtes. Jetzt wird er dafür getröstet, du aber musst leiden.
Außerdem ist zwischen uns und euch ein tiefer, unüberwindlicher Abgrund, so dass niemand von hier zu euch oder von dort zu uns kommen kann, selbst wenn er wollte.
Da sagte der Reiche: Dann bitte ich dich, Vater, schick ihn in das Haus meines Vaters!
Denn ich habe noch fünf Brüder. Er soll sie warnen, damit nicht auch sie an diesen Ort der Qual kommen.
Abraham aber sagte: Sie haben Mose und die Propheten, auf die sollen sie hören.
Er erwiderte: Nein, Vater Abraham, nur wenn einer von den Toten zu ihnen kommt, werden sie umkehren.
Darauf sagte Abraham: Wenn sie auf Mose und die Propheten nicht hören, werden sie sich auch nicht überzeugen lassen, wenn einer von den Toten aufersteht.

Naquele tempo, disse Jesus aos fariseus: “Havia um homem rico, que se vestia com roupas finas e elegantes e fazia festas esplêndidas todos os dias. Um pobre, chamado Lázaro, cheio de feridas, estava no chão, à porta do rico. Ele queria matar a fome com as sobras que caíam da mesa do rico. E, além disso, vinham os cachorros lamber suas feridas.
Quando o pobre morreu, os anjos levaram-no para junto de Abraão. Morreu também o rico e foi enterrado. Na região dos mortos, no meio dos tormentos, o rico levantou os olhos e viu de longe a Abraão, com Lázaro ao seu lado. Então gritou: ‘Pai Abraão, tem piedade de mim! Manda Lázaro molhar a ponta do dedo para me refrescar a língua, porque sofro muito nestas chamas’.
Mas Abraão respondeu: ‘Filho, lembra-te de que recebeste teus bens durante a vida e Lázaro, por sua vez, os males. Agora, porém, ele encontra aqui consolo e tu és atormentado. E, além disso, há um grande abismo entre nós: por mais que alguém desejasse, não poderia passar daqui para junto de vós, e nem os daí poderiam atravessar até nós’.
O rico insistiu: ‘Pai, eu te suplico, manda Lázaro à casa do meu pai, porque eu tenho cinco irmãos. Manda preveni-los, para que não venham também eles para este lugar de tormento’. Mas Abraão respondeu: ‘Eles têm Moisés e os Profetas, que os escutem!’
O rico insistiu: ‘Não, Pai Abraão, mas se um dos mortos for até eles, certamente vão se converter’. Mas Abraão lhe disse: ‘Se não escutam a Moisés, nem aos Profetas, eles não acreditarão, mesmo que alguém ressuscite dos mortos”’.

Born in 1458, St Casimir was of Lithuanian origin, the son of the King of Poland. He renounced the crown of Hungary at the urging of the Pope, and refused an arranged marriage designed to expand his realms. St Casimir was only 25 when he died, having overcome the seductions of power and luxury.

Mk 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and John
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,
and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Rabbi, it is good that we are here!
Let us make three tents:
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;
from the cloud came a voice,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain,
he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone,
except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
So they kept the matter to themselves,
questioning what rising from the dead meant.

En ces jours-là,
Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve.
Il lui dit :
« Abraham ! »
Celui-ci
répondit :
« Me voici ! »
Dieu dit :
« Prends ton fils, ton unique, celui que tu aimes, Isaac,
va au pays de Moriah,
et là tu l’offriras en holocauste
sur la montagne que je t’indiquerai. »
Ils arrivèrent à l’endroit que Dieu avait indiqué.
Abraham y bâtit l’autel et disposa le bois ;
puis il lia son fils Isaac
et le mit sur l’autel, par-dessus le bois.
Abraham étendit la main
et saisit le couteau pour immoler son fils.
Mais l’ange du Seigneur l’appela du haut du ciel et dit :
« Abraham ! Abraham ! »
Il répondit :
« Me voici ! »
L’ange lui dit :
« Ne porte pas la main sur le garçon !
Ne lui fais aucun mal !
Je sais maintenant que tu crains Dieu :
tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique. »
Abraham leva les yeux et vit un bélier
retenu par les cornes dans un buisson.
Il alla prendre le bélier
et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils.

Du ciel, l’ange du Seigneur appela une seconde fois Abraham.
Il déclara :
« Je le jure par moi-même, oracle du Seigneur :
parce que tu as fait cela,
parce que tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique,
je te comblerai de bénédictions,
je rendrai ta descendance aussi nombreuse
que les étoiles du ciel
et que le sable au bord de la mer,
et ta descendance occupera les places fortes de ses ennemis.
Puisque tu as écouté ma voix,
toutes les nations de la terre
s’adresseront l’une à l’autre la bénédiction

Schwestern und Brüder!
Ist Gott für uns, wer ist dann gegen uns?
Er hat seinen eigenen Sohn nicht verschont, sondern ihn für uns alle hingegeben – wie sollte er uns mit ihm nicht alles schenken? Gott ist es, der gerecht macht.
Wer kann sie verurteilen? Christus Jesus, der gestorben ist, mehr noch: der auferweckt worden ist, er sitzt zur Rechten Gottes und tritt für uns ein.

Naquele tempo, Jesus tomou consigo Pedro, Tiago e João, e os levou sozinhos a um lugar à parte sobre uma alta montanha. E transfigurou-se diante deles. Suas roupas ficaram brilhantes e tão brancas como nenhuma lavadeira sobre a terra poderia alvejar. Apareceram-lhe Elias e Moisés, e estavam conversando com Jesus. Então Pedro tomou a palavra e disse a Jesus: “Mestre, é bom ficarmos aqui. Vamos fazer três tendas: uma para ti, outra para Moisés e outra para Elias”. Pedro não sabia o que dizer, pois estavam todos com muito medo. Então desceu uma nuvem e os encobriu com sua sombra. E da nuvem saiu uma voz: “Este é o meu Filho amado. Escutai o que ele diz!” E, de repente, olhando em volta, não viram mais ninguém, a não ser somente Jesus com eles. Ao descerem da montanha, Jesus ordenou que não contassem a ninguém o que tinham visto, até que o Filho do Homem tivesse ressuscitado dos mortos. Eles observaram essa ordem, mas comentavam entre si o que queria dizer “ressuscitar dos mortos”.

and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers and sisters only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Aujourd’hui tu as obtenu du Seigneur cette déclaration :
lui sera ton Dieu ;

tu écouteras sa voix.
Aujourd’hui le Seigneur a obtenu de toi cette déclaration :

Ihr habt gehört, dass gesagt worden ist: Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben und deinen Feind hassen.
Ich aber sage euch: Liebt eure Feinde und betet für die, die euch verfolgen,
damit ihr Söhne eures Vaters im Himmel werdet; denn er lässt seine Sonne aufgehen über Bösen und Guten, und er lässt regnen über Gerechte und Ungerechte.
Wenn ihr nämlich nur die liebt, die euch lieben, welchen Lohn könnt ihr dafür erwarten? Tun das nicht auch die Zöllner?
Und wenn ihr nur eure Brüder grüßt, was tut ihr damit Besonderes? Tun das nicht auch die Heiden?
Ihr sollt also vollkommen sein, wie es auch euer himmlischer Vater ist.

Assim, vos tornareis filhos do vosso Pai que está nos céus, porque ele faz nascer o sol sobre maus e bons, e faz cair a chuva sobre justos e injustos. Porque, se amais somente aqueles que vos amam, que recompensa tereis? Os cobradores de impostos não fazem a mesma coisa?

E se saudais somente os vossos irmãos, o que fazeis de extraordinário? Os pagãos não fazem a mesma coisa? Portanto, sede perfeitos como o vosso Pai celeste é perfeito”

Hoy has elegido al Señor parque el que él sea tu Dios y tú vayas por sus caminos, observes sus mandatos,
preceptos y decretos, y escuches su voz. Y el Señor te ha elegido para que seas su propio pueblo, como te prometió,

la reine Esther, dans l’angoisse mortelle qui l’étreignait,
chercha refuge auprès du Seigneur.
Se prosternant à terre avec ses servantes du matin jusqu’au soir,
elle disait :
« Dieu d’Abraham, Dieu d’Isaac, Dieu de Jacob,
tu es béni.
Viens à mon secours car je suis seule,
et je n’ai pas d’autre défenseur que toi, Seigneur.
Car je vais jouer avec le danger.

Dans les livres de mes ancêtres, Seigneur,
j’ai appris que ceux qui te plaisent,
tu les libères pour toujours, Seigneur.
Et maintenant, aide-moi, car je suis solitaire
et je n’ai que toi, Seigneur mon Dieu.
Maintenant, viens me secourir car je suis orpheline,
et mets sur mes lèvres un langage harmonieux
quand je serai en présence de ce lion ;
fais que je trouve grâce devant lui,
et change son cœur :
qu’il se mette à détester celui qui nous combat,
qu’il le détruise avec tous ses partisans.

In jener Zeit sprach Jesus zu seinen Jüngern:
Bittet, dann wird euch gegeben; sucht, dann werdet ihr finden; klopft an, dann wird euch geöffnet.
Denn wer bittet, der empfängt; wer sucht, der findet; und wer anklopft, dem wird geöffnet.
Oder ist einer unter euch, der seinem Sohn einen Stein gibt, wenn er um Brot bittet,
oder eine Schlange, wenn er um einen Fisch bittet?
Wenn nun schon ihr, die ihr böse seid, euren Kindern gebt, was gut ist, wie viel mehr wird euer Vater im Himmel denen Gutes geben, die ihn bitten.
Alles, was ihr also von anderen erwartet, das tut auch ihnen! Darin besteht das Gesetz und die Propheten.

Eure Ältesten ermahne ich, da ich ein Ältester bin wie sie und ein Zeuge der Leiden Christi und auch an der Herrlichkeit teilhaben soll, die sich offenbaren wird:
Sorgt als Hirten für die euch anvertraute Herde Gottes, nicht aus Zwang, sondern freiwillig, wie Gott es will; auch nicht aus Gewinnsucht, sondern aus Neigung;
seid nicht Beherrscher eurer Gemeinden, sondern Vorbilder für die Herde!
Wenn dann der oberste Hirt erscheint, werdet ihr den nie verwelkenden Kranz der Herrlichkeit empfangen.

demandait à ses disciples :
« Au dire des gens,
qui est le Fils de l’homme ? »
Ils répondirent :
« Pour les uns, Jean le Baptiste ;
pour d’autres, Élie ;
pour d’autres encore, Jérémie ou l’un des prophètes. »
Jésus leur demanda :
« Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je ? »
Alors Simon-Pierre prit la parole et dit :
« Tu es le Christ,
le Fils du Dieu vivant ! »
Prenant la parole à son tour, Jésus lui dit :

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Mateus (Mt 16,13-19)

Naquele tempo, Jesus foi à região de Cesaréia de Filipe e ali perguntou aos seus discípulos: “Quem dizem os homens ser o Filho do Homem?” Eles responderam: “Alguns dizem que é João Batista; outros que é Elias; outros ainda, que é Jeremias ou algum dos profetas”. Então Jesus lhes perguntou: “E vós, quem dizeis que eu sou?” Simão Pedro respondeu: “Tu és o Messias, o Filho do Deus vivo”.

Respondendo, Jesus lhe disse: “Feliz és tu, Simão, filho de Jonas, porque não foi um ser humano que te revelou isso, mas o meu Pai que está no céu. Por isso eu te digo que tu és Pedro, e sobre esta pedra construirei a minha Igreja, e o poder do inferno nunca poderá vencê-la. Eu te darei as chaves do Reino dos Céus: tudo o que tu ligares na terra será ligado nos céus; tudo o que tu desligares na terra será desligado nos céus”.

PALAVRAS DO SANTO PADRE

Hoje, ouvimos a pergunta de Jesus dirigida a cada um de nós: «E vós, quem dizeis que eu sou?». A cada um de nós. E cada um deve dar uma resposta que não seja teórica, mas que envolva fé, isto é, vida, porque fé é vida! “Para mim és…”, e dizer a confissão de Jesus. Uma resposta que também exige que nós, como os primeiros discípulos, ouçamos interiormente a voz do Pai e estejamos em harmonia com o que a Igreja, reunida à volta de Pedro, continua a proclamar. Trata-se de compreender quem é para nós Cristo: se Ele é o centro da nossa vida, se Ele é o fim de todos os nossos compromissos na Igreja, do nosso compromisso na sociedade. Quem é Jesus Cristo para mim? Quem é Jesus Cristo para cada um de vós… Uma resposta que deveríamos dar todos os dias. (Angelus 23 de agosto de 2020)

1 ¹ For the leader. A psalm of David,

2 when Nathan the prophet came to him after his affair with Bathsheba.

3 Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness; in your abundant compassion blot out my offense.

4 Wash away all my guilt; from my sin cleanse me.

5 For I know my offense; my sin is always before me.

6 Against you alone have I sinned; I have done such evil in your sight That you are just in your sentence, blameless when you condemn.

7 ² True, I was born guilty, a sinner, even as my mother conceived me.

8 Still, you insist on sincerity of heart; in my inmost being teach me wisdom.

9 ³ Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure; wash me, make me whiter than snow.

10 Let me hear sounds of joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc
(Mc 8, 1-10)

En ces jours-là,
comme il y avait une grande foule,
et que les gens n’avaient rien à manger,
Jésus appelle à lui ses disciples et leur dit :
« J’ai de la compassion pour cette foule,
car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi,
et n’ont rien à manger.
Si je les renvoie chez eux à jeun,
ils vont défaillir en chemin,
et certains d’entre eux sont venus de loin. »
Ses disciples lui répondirent :
« Où donc pourra- t-on trouver du pain
pour les rassasier ici, dans le désert ? »
Il leur demanda :
« Combien de pains avez-vous ? »
Ils lui dirent :
« Sept. »
Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre.
Puis, prenant les sept pains
et rendant grâce,
il les rompit,
et il les donnait à ses disciples
pour que ceux-ci les distribuent ;
et ils les distribuèrent à la foule.
Ils avaient aussi quelques petits poissons,
que Jésus bénit et fit aussi distribuer.
Les gens mangèrent et furent rassasiés.
On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient :
cela faisait sept corbeilles.
Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille.
Puis Jésus les renvoya.
Aussitôt, montant dans la barque avec ses disciples,
il alla dans la région de Dalmanoutha.

Allons, attaquons-le par notre langue,
ne faisons pas attention à toutes ses paroles. »

Mais toi, Seigneur, fais attention à moi,
écoute ce que disent mes adversaires.
Comment peut-on rendre le mal pour le bien ?
Ils ont creusé une fosse pour me perdre.
Souviens-toi que je me suis tenu en ta présence
pour te parler en leur faveur,
pour détourner d’eux ta colère.

Jer 18:18-20

The people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem said,
“Come, let us contrive a plot against Jeremiah.
It will not mean the loss of instruction from the priests,
nor of counsel from the wise, nor of messages from the prophets.
And so, let us destroy him by his own tongue;
let us carefully note his every word.”

Heed me, O LORD,
and listen to what my adversaries say.
Must good be repaid with evil
that they should dig a pit to take my life?
Remember that I stood before you
to speak in their behalf,
to turn away your wrath from them.

Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Matthäus – Mt 20, 17-28

In jener Zeit,
als Jesus nach Jerusalem hinaufzog, nahm er unterwegs die zwölf Jünger beiseite und sagte zu ihnen:
Wir gehen jetzt nach Jerusalem hinauf; dort wird der Menschensohn den Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten ausgeliefert; sie werden ihn zum Tod verurteilen
und den Heiden übergeben, damit er verspottet, gegeißelt und gekreuzigt wird; aber am dritten Tag wird er auferstehen.
Damals kam die Frau des Zebedäus mit ihren Söhnen zu Jesus und fiel vor ihm nieder, weil sie ihn um etwas bitten wollte.
Er fragte sie: Was willst du? Sie antwortete: Versprich, dass meine beiden Söhne in deinem Reich rechts und links neben dir sitzen dürfen.
Jesus erwiderte: Ihr wisst nicht, um was ihr bittet. Könnt ihr den Kelch trinken, den ich trinken werde? Sie sagten zu ihm: Wir können es.
Da antwortete er ihnen: Ihr werdet meinen Kelch trinken; doch den Platz zu meiner Rechten und zu meiner Linken habe nicht ich zu vergeben; dort werden die sitzen, für die mein Vater diese Plätze bestimmt hat.
Als die zehn anderen Jünger das hörten, wurden sie sehr ärgerlich über die beiden Brüder.
Da rief Jesus sie zu sich und sagte: Ihr wisst, dass die Herrscher ihre Völker unterdrücken und die Mächtigen ihre Macht über die Menschen missbrauchen.
Bei euch soll es nicht so sein, sondern wer bei euch groß sein will, der soll euer Diener sein,
und wer bei euch der Erste sein will, soll euer Sklave sein.
Denn auch der Menschensohn ist nicht gekommen, um sich dienen zu lassen, sondern um zu dienen und sein Leben hinzugeben als Lösegeld für viele.

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,
he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves,
and said to them on the way,
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests
and the scribes,
and they will condemn him to death,
and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified,
and he will be raised on the third day.”

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She answered him,
“Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”
Jesus said in reply,
“You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”
They said to him, “We can.”
He replied,
“My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left,
this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Mateus (Mt 20,17-28)

Naquele tempo, enquanto Jesus subia para Jerusalém, ele tomou os doze discípulos à parte e, durante a caminhada, disse-lhes: “Eis que estamos subindo para Jerusalém, e o Filho do Homem será entregue aos sumos sacerdotes e aos mestres da Lei. Eles o condenarão à morte, e o entregarão aos pagãos para zombarem dele, para flagelá-lo e crucificá-lo. Mas no terceiro dia ressuscitará”.

A mãe dos filhos de Zebedeu aproximou-se de Jesus com seus filhos e ajoelhou-se com a intenção de fazer um pedido. Jesus perguntou: “Que queres?” Ela respondeu: “Manda que estes meus dois filhos se sentem, no teu Reino, um à tua direita e outro à tua esquerda”. Jesus, então, respondeu-lhes: “Não sabeis o que estais pedindo. Por acaso podeis beber o cálice que eu vou beber?” Eles responderam: “Podemos”. Então Jesus lhes disse: “De fato, vós bebereis do meu cálice, mas não depende de mim conceder o lugar à minha direita ou à minha esquerda. Meu Pai é quem dará esses lugares àqueles para os quais ele os preparou”.

Quando os outros dez discípulos ouviram isso, ficaram irritados contra os dois irmãos. Jesus, porém, chamou-os, e disse: “Vós sabeis que os chefes das nações têm poder sobre elas e os grandes as oprimem. Entre vós não deverá ser assim. Quem quiser tornar-se grande, torne-se vosso servidor; quem quiser ser o primeiro, seja vosso servo. Pois, o Filho do Homem não veio para ser servido, mas para servir e dar a sua vida como resgate em favor de muitos”.

los escribas, y lo condenarán a muerte y lo entregarán a los gentiles, para que se burlen de él, lo azoten y lo
crucifiquen; y al tercer día resucitará». Entonces se le acercó la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo con sus hijos
y se postró para hacerle una petición.
Él le preguntó:
«¿Qué deseas?». Ella contestó:
«Ordena que estos dos hijos míos se sienten en tu reino, uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda» Pero
Jesús replicó:
«No sabéis lo que pedís. ¿Podéis beber el cáliz que yo he de beber?». Contestaron:
-«Podemos». Él les dijo:
«Mi cáliz lo beberéis; pero sentarse a mi derecha o a mi izquierda no me toca a mí concederlo, es para
aquellos para quienes lo tiene reservado mi Padre». Los otros diez, al oír aquello, se indignaron contra los dos
hermanos. Y llamándolos, Jesús, les dijo:
«Sabéis que los jefes de los pueblos los tiranizan y que los grandes los oprimen. No será así entre vosotros:
el que quiera ser grande entre vosotros, que sea vuestro servidor, y el que quiera ser primero entre vosotros,
que sea vuestro esclavo.
Igual que el Hijo del hombre no ha venido a ser servido sino a servir y a dar su vida en rescate por muchos».

ST. CUNEGUNDA, BRIDE OF ST. HENRY II, EMPEROR

St Cunegunda was married to St Henry, the Holy Roman Emperor. She built numerous monasteries and churches, and was known for her care for the poor. After her husband died, she became a nun, devoting herself to caring for her sick sisters, and taking on the humblest tasks.

6:11 我們的日用糧，求你今天賜給我們；

6:12 寬免我們的罪債，猶如我們也寬免得罪我們的人；
